Systemic Beauty: Poetry, Film, and the Divine

COMPLIT
151
Focus is on a comparative exploration of poetry and cinema through the lens of the sublime. Of particular interest are those fleeting moments of unspeakable beauty that emerge through art and literature. Through readings, film screenings, and open discussion, students will examine themes including nature, emotion, time, and revelation, exploring how works of poetry and cinema from a variety of sources work to disclose what lies beyond (and within) our world. Authors include Antonioni, Bresson, Bunuel, Camoes, Celan, Farrokhzad, Holderlin, Jeffers, Kimiavi, Lispector, Pessoa, Pizarnik, Rumi, Tarkovsky, and Trakl.
