Alumni Spotlight: Behzad Haghgoo ('21)
Behzad Haghgoo graduated from Stanford in 2021 with a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science with a focus on Artificial Intelligence (AI). After graduation, he started a company with some of his Stanford friends and built collaborative coding tools and ended up selling the company to Roblox. He now works at Roblox on collaboration and AI tools for game developers.
While at Stanford, Behzad engaged his enthusiasm for Iran’s history and culture by enrolling in courses taught by Dr. Abbas Milani. Reflecting on those experiences, Behzad shared: “Growing up in Iran, you get told many different tales about why things are the way they are, and different narratives about the past, the present, and what the future will look like. I wanted to get a better sense of what actually happened, so I started reading history in highschool and ended up reading some of Dr. Milani’s books.”
Behzad shared that the multidisciplinary approach to his coursework lent him a broader perspective on his studies: “For example, in Dr. Milani’s class on US-Iran relations, I got a much more nuanced understanding of events that happened after the revolution. Also, as someone who was an engineering major, it was a very interesting experience to dive into a different type of research. Reading through archival material trying to answer my questions was very fun! Overall, I learned a lot from all of the Iranian Studies Program’s classes and talks, [as well as] how students from other countries with different backgrounds view Iran.”
