Class of 2024 Spotlight: Matin Mirramezani

Matin Mirramezani

Matin Mirramezani is graduating this summer with a bachelor’s degree in economics and a minor in global studies, with a specialization in Iranian studies.

Reflecting on his time at Stanford and what he is most proud of accomplishing, Matin shared, “I am proud of what I have been able to learn throughout my time at Stanford, especially when it comes to Iran. I am also proud of the contributions I have been able to make, however small, to the study of Iran’s development as a part of the Iran 2040 Project.”

Read the Q&A below to learn more about Matin’s experience as a Stanford undergraduate.

Tell us your favorite story or experience related to your Iranian studies minor.

There are truly too many great memories to pick only one. The Iranian Studies Program has turned Stanford into a hub for Iranian artists and literaries unlike anywhere else, showcasing and documenting the giants of Iranian arts and letters. Getting to see the Crossroads play that was written and directed by Professor [Bahram] Beyzaie, hearing the live performance of Maestro Kalhor, listening to Moniro Ravanipour reading her brilliant work, and discussing Persepolis with Marjane Satrapi are all among experiences that I will never forget.

Why did you choose to study Iran? How has your minor in Global Studies changed your understanding of the world and prepared you for your next steps?

I decided to study Iran to get a better understanding of where I was born and raised. I have learned more than I could have imagined thanks to the incredible faculty at the Iranian Studies Program and the immense opportunities that the program offers to learn beyond the classroom. The program has shaped my own professional and personal trajectory. I have certainly grown intellectually thanks to the program. Not only do I have a deeper understanding of the issues that engulf Iran and the world, but I am also better prepared to think critically about them. Studying Iran from multiple perspectives has really pushed me to develop a holistic understanding, which is a unique aspect of the minor. We live in an ever more complex world and the tools I gained from minoring in Iranian Studies have prepared me well for encountering it.

What are your plans after graduation?

I will continue seeking answers to questions that puzzle me using the tools I have gained at Stanford.
