Meet Malaina Kapoor, '25

Malaina Kapoor

Malaina Kapoor is graduating this year with a degree in international relations. "Stanford has taught me to think critically about the world," she said. "Not just about geopolitical dynamics and contemporary politics, but also about the stories and experiences of everyday people who ultimately shape history."

Read the Q&A below to learn more about Malaina's undergraduate experience.

What has been your favorite class at Stanford and why?

My favorite class at Stanford was POLISCI 245R: Politics in Modern Iran. I first met Dr. Abbas Milani in that class, who later became my academic and thesis advisor. My final paper for that course also sparked my eventual senior thesis with the Center for Democracy, Development, and Rule of Law (CDDRL).

What kind of research, course projects, or co-curricular activities did you participate in during your time at Stanford?

I wrote my CDDRL honors thesis about mandatory unveiling in 1936 Iran under the supervision of Dr. Milani. I also founded the Women in National Security program at Stanford's Gordian Knot Center (WINS), an initiative to combat female underrepresentation in national security and support female Stanford students who are interested in entering the space.

Tell us your favorite major/minor/program-related story or experience! Any adventures abroad or fascinating guest lectures?

One of my favorite memories was when the Iranian Studies Program graciously hosted an event for the book I coauthored, Defiant Dreams: The Journey of an Afghan Girl Who Risked Everything for Education (Penguin Random House). It was so gratifying to share the book with the Stanford community and engage in discussion with students and faculty who are passionate about women's rights.

As you reflect on your time at Stanford, what are you most proud of?

I'm proud to be a part of such a kind, smart, and welcoming campus community. These past four years have been such an incredible gift.

What are your plans after graduation?

I will pursue my JD at Harvard Law School.
